The CPI(M) is facing serious embarrassment due to the sex scandals in the Malayalam film industry, as internal party divisions over accused actor M Mukesh’s continued status as an MLA are becoming public.

The new complaint against Jayasurya was filed because of the claim made by a Thiruvananthapuram-born actor that she was sexually attacked by Jayasurya in 2013 while they were filming a movie in the Thodupuzha area of the Idukki district.

A new lawsuit is expected to be filed against filmmaker Ranjith because a 33-year-old Kozhikode resident said that in 2012, when the filmmaker sought him about a film job, he sexually assaulted him at a hotel in Bengaluru. It was discovered that the police had a record.

A Kochi magistrate heard a testimony from the actor who had made sexual accusations against seven people, including Mukesh, on Friday.

On Friday, the state saw more intense rallies calling for Mukesh’s resignation as an MLA. Additionally, a group of female activists has vowed to stage a sit-in protest in front of the AKG center, the state headquarters of the CPI(M), calling for his resignation.

When party Politburo member Brinda Karat criticized the CPI(M) for defending Mukesh’s MLA position, divisions inside the party also became apparent.

Karat praised the left-front administration in an essay on the Hema committee report for filing a complaint against its own MLA, but he also said that the party shouldn’t defend its MLAs who are accused of sexual assault by the Congress.

“We shouldn’t engage in a pointless debate that is diversionary or, as it is known in Hindi, a “tu-tu-main-main” (you did this and I did that). The goal is and has to be to give women everywhere a safe space to live,” she stated in a piece.
