The Unique Ferrari Daytona SP3 by Piero Ferrari

When I decided to configure a Ferrari Daytona for myself, I took a trip back in time. It all started in November 1965. At that time, we had just won the Formula 1 World Championship with John Surtees. The car was white with a blue livery from the North American Racing Team, led by Luigi Chinetti, our importer. This livery was very special.

It came from a sports problem. My father had a refusal from the sports commission to homologate the Le Mans as a Gran Turismo. Because of this, he returned the sports license and registered the cars under the North American Racing Team’s license, using American colors. This event is famous and is linked to Formula 1. It is also connected to a unique special version by Pininfarina of a 250 Le Mans. Pininfarina made this one-off not for racing, but for an auto show. This car had the same white and blue livery with a red interior that I liked a lot.

From these photos, I reconstructed the story and configured the car. The Daytona has a very aggressive and sporty contemporary design. It features sporty driving characteristics and a powerful 12-cylinder engine. However, it has some nods to the past. The name “Daytona” is a reminder of the victory at the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1967. A year or two later, there was a Pininfarina model called P5. The rear of this car had these slats, which were a very important design detail for those years.

This idea was born from a blend of today’s technology and memories of the past. I chose a white color that reflects this mix. I asked an artist friend who creates beautiful car paintings to make a piece for me. Before picking up the Daytona, he produced this painting for me, and I keep it as a memory of those years in my office, where I also think of my father.

I picked up the Daytona just a few days ago. I had the chance to drive it for the first time at Fiorano. This was a special moment as I got to take three laps around Fiorano. It was a chance to understand the car better, not in traffic, but on a clear track. This was the baptism of the car, and I am happy that it is now in my garage, clean and shiny. I will use it on important days.
