It is a frustration that befell the Florida faithful as their team went down 33-20 to Texas A&M. Simply put, that was not how the Gators season was supposed to go, especially when starting out with a new quarterback. Much was expected from this game after Florida State dropped a loss against Memphis; the Gators did not come on top but what currently lies ahead of them will be all that matters in the long run.
Florida’s defense has been a huge concern through these first two games, allowing at least 33 to both of the Power Five opponents it’s played this season. And it still must play Florida State and Central Florida to finish, so there’s a real chance of the season ending without beating one of those programs.
Quarterback Performance
It would be a game both Graham Mertz and DJ Lagway would want to forget from the recently played game. Mertz was good as he completed 12 of 15 passes and posted 195 yards with one touchdown. Lagway had his share of struggles as only six of 13 passes resulted in 54 yards and two interceptions for him. The offense hardly started the run game, and though it’s okay for guys like Elijah Badger or DK to make some plays, the overall performance wasn’t something the fans were looking for.
Defensive Flops
But the bottom line is plain: This defense needs to play a lot, much better. Giving up 41 to Miami and then 33 to Texas A&M raises very serious questions about whether this unit has the stomach of a scorpion when it gets hot. The Gators continue to be porous on third downs, and that is one of the last lines of stopping the foes from advancing and keeps the team in this mess. Other Challenges in the Future
It gets no easier this week. Games are lined up against Bowling Green, Arkansas, Missouri, and Mississippi State in the next few days. There are wins to be had here, but there is also much resistance to gain some momentum back.
Bigger Picture
As the season enters its last weeks, pressure is mounting on the head coach, Billy Napier. With the sky-high stakes, every game is essential. Florida State cannot wait as that team that gets a win may book his ticket to the next season. Now, the Gators have to stay strong both offensively and defensively to emerge out of this frustrating season.
Conclusion
Florida fans haven’t signed up for this level of disappointment. The hope is that the team can rally and make the necessary adjustments to finish the season well. With a combination of talent and determination, the Gators can find a way to compete at a very high level. To do so, though, will require all hands on deck.
