The Porsche 718 Cayman: A Timeless Sports Car

We are looking at the Porsche 718 Cayman. This car is one of the best two-door coupes Porsche has ever made. It is also one of the best coupes on sale today. Sadly, we may lose this car soon. In 2025, Porsche will release a new, fully electric version. While the petrol version will still exist for a little while, we do not know how long. This makes the 718 a special car, as it is the last of a dying breed of affordable sports cars.

Pricing and Value

The 718 Cayman starts at a bit over $130,000. This price is not cheap, but the value stacks up well. For this reason, we decided to take another look at the 718. We chose the Cayman with the base 2.0L flat-four engine, which is more enthusiast-focused.

Style Edition

Today, we have the 718 Style Edition. This version is a slightly fancier version of the base model. It starts at just over $136,000, which is about $45,000 more than the base model. The Style Edition is available in both Cayman and Boxster versions. It comes with unique color combinations and some special features.

  • Six unique color combinations
  • 20-inch wheels instead of 19-inch
  • Black exhaust tips

Interior Comfort

When I first jumped into the 718 Cayman, I was impressed. I am 6 feet tall and had plenty of room. The cabin is comfortable, and the driving position feels just right. There are armrests on both sides, making long drives easier. The seats are adjustable, with an option for 18-way adjustments. This makes them very comfortable for long trips.

Storage Space

There are some small storage areas in the cabin. Each door has a small bin, and there is a place for your phone. The glove box has enough space for personal items too. However, there are some compromises with storage in a mid-engine sports car. But Porsche has made the best of what they have.

Technology and Multimedia

The multimedia system might feel a little old. The screen is small, and the software looks dated. However, it does have Apple Car Play, which is a plus. The buttons may look old, but they feel nice to touch and are easy to use.

Practicality

Let’s talk about the practicality of the 718 Cayman. It may seem like a sports car, but it has some useful features. The front trunk has about 150 liters of space. It is a good shape for storing items. The rear trunk offers even more space, with a total of 272 liters.

Fuel Economy

Fuel costs might not be your main concern, but they are worth mentioning. The combined fuel consumption for the PDK version is about 7 liters per 100 kilometers. In real life, I have seen around 10 liters. However, I did see as low as 6.4 liters per 100 kilometers on the highway. The fuel tank can hold 64 liters, giving the car long-range abilities.

Driving Experience

Driving the Porsche 718 Cayman is an exciting experience. Even with the base 2.0L engine, it performs well. The engine produces 220 kW of power and 380 Nm of torque. This means it can punch out of corners with ease.

Handling and Comfort

The steering in the 718 is fantastic. You can feel everything that goes through the wheels. The brake pedal feel is also great, allowing for smooth stops. The car’s mid-engine layout helps with handling, making it easy to turn and round corners quickly.

Long-Distance Driving

On a long journey, the Cayman performs well. Initially, I found the ride a bit rough. But as I settled in, I adjusted. I did feel some fatigue, but that is expected in a sports car. The sport seats offer some comfort, but they are not perfect for long trips. I recommend the 19-inch wheels for a smoother ride.

Noise Levels

Road noise can be a bit loud. Porsche keeps the car light by not adding too much soundproofing. This trade-off is worth it for many, but if you want a quieter ride, you might want to look elsewhere.

Safety Features

The 718 Cayman comes with many safety features. It has multiple airbags, front and rear parking sensors, and some basic driver aids like blind-spot monitoring. However, it is missing some features like lane assist, which some drivers may miss.

Final Thoughts

Buying an older model can bring mixed feelings. You may wonder if you should wait for the new generation or go for the current model, which has proven itself over time. The current 718 does feel a bit dated with its tech and safety features. However, it still offers a thrilling driving experience and is a fantastic car overall.

If you are looking for a sports car that you can enjoy for years, the 718 Cayman is a great choice. It is a car that reminds us of what sports cars were before they went electric. I would love to hear your thoughts. Let me know in the comments below!
