Winter Weather Update for North Texas

Winter Weather Update is here in North Texas! Tomorrow, we will see the winter weather across the area. If you have not done so already, now is the time to get ready. Make sure you have everything you need for the cold and snow.

The area around the Metroplex and out toward the north and east has been upgraded to a winter storm warning. This warning means we will see a lot of snow. We are talking about widespread snowfall of 2 to 4 inches. In some spots, we might even see 6 inches or more. Some areas near the Red River could get close to 8 inches of snow!

The winter storm warning is in effect for a large part of North Texas, including the Dallas-Fort Worth area. In Dallas and Fort Worth, we expect 2 to 4 inches of snow. If you go a little farther north, you might see more than 5 inches. Areas closer to the Red River could see between 6 to 8 inches. However, if you are south of I-20, the snowfall totals will be less.

What to Expect

Here’s how the weather will take shape. The storm system is currently out to the west. Today, we will have partly cloudy skies, but the storm will move into our area late tonight. This will likely happen after 3:00 a.m. Tomorrow morning, during the rush hour, we will begin to see winter weather.

At first, we might see some sleet and a little rain. As the day goes on, the weather will become more widespread. The blue areas on the weather map show where we will have a wintry mix of sleet and snow. The northern areas, especially near the Red River, will see mostly snow.

As temperatures warm into the mid to upper 30s, we may still get some rain mixed in. But as we head into the late afternoon and evening, the temperatures will start to fall again. By then, we will likely see all snow. Some of this snow could be heavy at times.

Timing of the Winter Weather

We expect the bulk of the wintry precipitation to move out after midnight, around 5:00 a.m. on Friday. After that, the weather should start to improve throughout Friday.

Right now, it is 27 degrees outside Love Field Airport. Today, temperatures are expected to warm into the upper 30s to around 40 degrees. It will still feel chilly, but not too bad compared to the cold winter weather coming our way.

Weather Alert Days

Thursday and early Friday are designated as weather alert days. This means we need to pay close attention to the forecast. Winter weather can be tricky, and conditions can change quickly. Be prepared for messy roads and travel delays.
