The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is a very special event. Year after year, the sky is filled with colorful balloons as people come from all over to witness this incredible spectacle. But how did this extraordinary event begin? Let’s take a look at how it all started.
How It All Began
In 1972, KOB Radio and Television wanted to have a party to celebrate their 50th anniversary. They had something unique in mind for the party. So, they contacted Sid Cutter – a pilot – who loved balloons. He was thrilled and ready to be of help. On April 8, 1972, just more than a dozen balloons soared into the Albuquerque skies. It was a big success! About 20,000 people came to watch the balloons lift off and even viewed an air race.
They became a success show. Interest was now taken in balloons. Everyone wanted it to be an annual event. Mistakes were made in the early days by Sid and his team. But they learned from each mistake. Each mistake helped to improve. To 1973, more balloonists joined in fun. Among them were balloonists Dr. Thomas McConnell. More than 120 balloons were readied. They launched from the State Fairgrounds.

Growing the Fiesta
The Balloon Fiesta grew on with the years. The audience grew in number and more balloons filled the skies. Fiela has expanded into two weekends in October, together with a whole week of weekdays in between. It meant that more days would be fun for everyone.
Many issues rose as the event continued to grow. They needed a more expansive venue for events. The first one took place in a small parking lot. Afterwards, it was held in a dirt field. Then finally found an open area in the north side of Albuquerque. It had more than 350 acres. It was perfect because tens of thousands of spectators came to watch the event.
Special Events and Traditions
The Fiesta has included many interesting events over the years. Among the most popular events is the Balloon Glow, which began in 1987. In this event, it allows balloons to be tied to the ground but lit up at night to create a magical sight! Another favorite is the Special Shapes Rodeo. It is a balloon show where balloons take different shapes, fun shapes including animals and characters.

The Balloon Fiesta placed Albuquerque on the international map. Overnight, everybody knew of this lovely city, thanks to those balloons. Many people wondered if the Fiesta ever once demonstrated tendencies to move to another city, like Phoenix. No! This event belongs in New Mexico, and the team wanted it to stay here.
The Magic of the Fiesta
It has been more than 50 years since the start of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. Today, it is still applicable in bringing joy to all ages. You can really find no way to miss the magic. Who could forget that feeling when you see a child and even an adult all smiling while looking at the balloons? It’s special.
